Ground clove is a fine, deep-brown powder made from dried clove flower buds. It delivers intense warm, sweet, and slightly numbing aromatics, so a pinch can dominate blends. Use it in spice cakes, pumpkin pies, garam masala, mulled wine or cider, and rich braises, or bloom briefly in fat for savory dishes. Typically sold pre-ground in small jars.
Native to the Maluku (Spice Islands) of Indonesia, clove spread along Indian Ocean trade routes into South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Major producers include Indonesia, Madagascar, Tanzania (Zanzibar), and Sri Lanka; buds are harvested before opening, sun-dried, then milled.
