Steamed Broccoli
Ingredients
- 1 pounds broccoli – cut into florets; stems peeled and sliced (~2 medium broccolis)
- 2 cups water
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
- lemon – cut into wedges (for serving)

Instructions
- 1.
Trim the broccoli into bite-size florets; peel the tough outer layer of the stems and slice the stems 0.5-inch thick.
- 2.
Pour the water into a pot fitted with a steamer basket, ensuring the basket sits above the waterline. Cover and bring the water to a boil over high heat.
- 3.
Add the broccoli to the basket, cover, and steam over medium-high heat until bright green and crisp-tender, 5–7 minutes; a fork should pierce the stems with slight resistance.
- 4.
Transfer the broccoli to a bowl, drizzle with olive oil, and season with kosher salt and black pepper. Toss to coat evenly.
- 5.
Serve hot with lemon wedges, squeezing lemon over the broccoli just before eating if desired.
Steamed broccoli is a clean, bright side dish that showcases the vegetable’s natural sweetness and tender-crisp texture. The gentle steam preserves its vivid green color while keeping the florets juicy and the stems pleasantly firm. Light seasoning lets the broccoli shine, making it a versatile partner for rich mains or simple weeknight plates.
In American home cooking and restaurants alike, steamed broccoli has long been a go-to for balancing heavier entrées and adding a healthful element. The method draws on universal steaming techniques, prized for preserving nutrients and flavor. Through the late 20th century, it became a staple in diners, steakhouses, and everyday kitchens, emblematic of straightforward, wholesome sides.
