Brandy Alexander is a silky, dessert-leaning cocktail that marries the warmth of brandy with the chocolatey sweetness of crème de cacao and the lush texture of cream. Served up and dusted with aromatic nutmeg, it drinks like a refined adult milkshake—rich yet balanced, with gentle spice on the nose. Its appeal lies in the interplay of spirit, sweetness, and dairy, yielding a smooth, indulgent sip that remains elegant rather than cloying.
The drink evolved in the early 20th century from the gin-based Alexander, as bartenders substituted brandy to create what became known as the Brandy Alexander. It rose to prominence in American and British bars through Prohibition and mid-century cocktail culture, where creamy dessert drinks were fashionable. Today it stands as a classic of American bartending, celebrated in both vintage cocktail books and modern craft bars for its simple formula and nostalgic charm.
